The Challenge

This large health care provider[1] serves a regional population of just over one million people. The organization’s Training and Development group required a custom-developed training session for selected staff members on “productivity”. While the requirement was described in general terms, additional work was required to identify the specifics.


The Solution

We asked for and received the names and contact information for five individuals they felt typified the participant expected in the session. Contacting each of these individuals by telephone, we explained the situation and interviewed them with an eye to establishing session content and structure that would both meet the established requirements and be relevant to the group.

From these interviews we developed a semi-structured workshop that enabled us to address the needs identified in our telephone interviews while, at the same time, allowing the flexibility to handle additional requirements that arose in the session.


The Results

Each participant returned a detailed evaluation of their thoughts on the day’s activities and their effectiveness and relevance. The overall numerical evaluation for the day was 4.5 (90%) with numerous descriptive comments that included:

  • This was a great session.
  • Ann Max is an excellent speaker.
  • Excellent course, everyone needs it!
  • Motivational, encouraging.
  • Ann kept me interested and very motivating.
  • Ann is amazing!! Thank you Ann!! I feel good about this!

At a follow-up meeting, we were informed that our session was one of the more popular ones and that many other employees, having heard about the program, were requesting to be included in future sessions.
